About

What is a Comprehensive Diagnostic Audiogram?

A comprehensive diagnostic audiogram is an in-depth hearing test that goes beyond basic screenings. This advanced test will give you all the information you need to make an informed decision about your hearing health.

The testing process

Here's what to expect during the testing process:

Case History

It all starts with a comprehensive case history. We explore your past medical history, exposure to noise, and family history of hearing loss. This can help us pinpoint factors that could contribute to hearing issues and tailor the diagnostic process to your specific situation.

Pure Tone Audiometry

During this test, you will listen to a series of tones at different volumes and pitches through insert earphones or  headphones. Each tone is played at a specific frequency and decibel level to map the quietest sound you can hear across the spectrum. This helps in identifying hearing loss and also maps the extent and pattern across the range of human hearing.

Word recognition and Speech Discrimination

These tests evaluate how well you understand speech with and without the presence of background noise. By determining the lowest level at which you can correctly identify words or sentences, we can assess your ability to distinguish speech from noise as well as assess your level of speech understanding based on the amount of hearing loss present in each ear. This information will help us recommend the best hearing aid to improve your hearing.

Tympanometry

We may also do a tympanometry test to test the movement of your eardrums. This procedure involves creating variations in air pressure within the ear canal to test the flexibility of the eardrum and the conduction bones. It can help diagnose fluid in the ear, otosclerosis, and eustachian tube dysfunction. Advanced tympanometry can give detailed insight into middle ear issues.

Guide

Your Results

After the test, we take the time to explain your results. We’ll help you understand how various sounds and speech have been affected, and help you make an informed decision about your hearing health. Whether you need hearing aids, an assistive listening device, or other support, we’re here to help.

Why is a Comprehensive Diagnostic Audiogram Important?

Comprehensive testing is important for your hearing health. It will show you exactly what you can and can’t hear, and it can make all the difference in your personalized hearing care plan. We recommend comprehensive testing for:

  • Individuals who need a detailed analysis for occupational assessments.
  • Musicians or others who depend on hearing for their profession.
  • Patients who want accurate results and the best possible treatment options.
